Page 5Died- March 11, 1888, at his home in Anderson Township, after a short illness, Dexter Newton, aged 66 years, 4 weeks and 1 day. The subject of the above sketch was born in Athens County, Ohio, Nov. 1, 1821, and in which state he resided 55 years. In 1876 he removed with his family to Mills County where he made his home until his death. During his sojourn in Mills County, by industry, economy and fair dealings he became to possessor of quite a large estate. He had a family of ten children, all girls and all married, two having already preceding their father to the other shore. He has been a member of the Christian Church for 45 years, and was one of the charter members of the Highland Church, organized Feb. 24, 1877, and organized as the Henderson Christian Church March 2, 1887. He had a deep interest in the church and gave to its support freely and liberally of the means with which he had been blessed. By the worthy example of himself and wife their children have all been led into the kingdom of Christ. His funeral was preached by Elder D.J. Lowe in the Wesley chapel after which his remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery. Thus lived and passed away at a ripe age, a kind husband, an affectionate father, a noble citizen and and an exemplary Christian. He leaves an aged widow, eight surviving children and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.
