Funeral services for Floyd Purcell was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church, District Superintendent M. A. Gable of Council Bluffs conducted the services, assisted by pastor Rev. L. M. Kirby.
A special choir, Mrs Clans Anderson and Floyd Owens and Mesdames F. H. Priest and Fred Lookout, with Mrs. Chas Anderson as accompanist sang. Many beautiful flowers testified to the loving remembrance of friends and relatives.
The local I.O.O.F. lodge attended in a body and conducted their beautiful ritualistic service at the grave under the direction of Charles Viner and Harry Knight. The pall bearers were Ed Hathaway, Wm. Oliver, Ray Hatfield, E. H. Crouse, N. J. Halt, and Leo Darland.
Floyd Samuel Purcell, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Purcell, was born at White cloud, Iowa on July 9, 1899 and passed away at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs on October 15, 1925 at the age of 29 years, 3 months, and 7 days.
He received his early education his early education at the Sandiland and Anderson Schools north of Hastings and later attended high school in Malvern, However he was forced to discontinue his schooling on account of ill health.
After leaving school he assisted his father on the farm and later followed the trade of machinist.
On September 30, 1922 he was united in marriage with Edythe Pickrell. After living at Strahan for two years they moved to Council Bluffs where Floyd was employed as machinist for the Iowa Fruit and Produce Company.
His health had been failing for over a year; however, he complained very little and continued working.
On Tuesday, October 4, he was stricken with appendicitis. On the following Tuesday an operation was performed at which time his appendix and tumor were removed. On the following day pneumonia set in and from then on his condition became very critical. His wife and father were at his bedside until he passed away at 4:30 Tuesday morning.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Hastings and of the Modern Woodmen of America, Hassel Camp No 171, Council Bluffs.
He is survived by his wife Edythe Purcell of Council Bluffs, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Purcell of Hastings, four sisters, Mrs. Alfred Clites, Evelyn and Marjorie Purcell of Hastings, Mrs. Oliver Achenbaugh of Shenandoah, two little nephews, Floyd and Keith Clites of Hastings, and a number of other relatives. He was preceded death by a younger brother, Joe, who passed away at the age of 13, November 25, 1915.
He will always be remembered by his cheerful disposition and king and thoughtful consideration of others which won for him a host of friends who mourn his loss.
