JAMES H. CATTRON CALLED BY DEATH SUNDAY EVENING
Civil War Veteran and Long Time Resident Passes Away at Age of 88 Years
FUNERAL SERVICES WEDNESDAY
Funeral Services Will Be Held from Methodist Church Wednesday Afternoon With Burial in West Liberty Cemetery

In the death of J.H. Cattron, who passed away Sunday evening, another beloved comrade has been mustered out of earthly service and joined the ranks of the grand army omnipotent whose ranks are never depleted by the ravage of time and whose members march ever in the realm eternal under the supreme generalship of that great commander of the worlds without end.

Mr. Cattron, who on last Monday passed his 88th birthday had been in failing health for the past four weeks and for the past week had been growing gradually weaker. Death came of ailments incident to his advanced years and about 9 o'clock Sunday evening he passed peacefully away.

He was born in Fulton County, Illinois, September 5, 1839. At the age of 4 he moved with his parents, John and Susanna Cattron, to Missouri where they resided for ten years, coming in the spring of 1853 to Mills county. Hazelbrush at that time covered what is now the court house square and only a few cabins marked the site of what is now Glenwood.

At the outbreak of the war he enlisted with Company B of the 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, serving during the entire period of the war. After the war was over he returned to this community and on October 29, 1868 he married Mary E. Buffington and they established their home on a farm north of Glenwood. To this home came three children; James Edgar who is now dead, Almira, now Mrs. S.P. Stranathan and Grace, now Mrs. Frank DuVal.

In 1903 Mrs. Cattron passed away and shortly thereafter he relinquished active farm duties and in the latter years of his life he has visited among relatives here and on the western coast. For the past several years he has made his home at the Dean Hotel in this city, finding great enjoyment in being able to daily mingle with his comrades and friends about town.

He was a member of the Methodist church and a man of sterling Christian character, honest and upright in all of his dealings, fair and courteous with his fellowmen; a man with strong convictions regarding the principles of right and wrong while always willing to aid and encourage yet he was slow to criticize and condemn. His was a life of long years of useful service and a life worthy of emulation.

Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church in this city Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.H. Freedline and burial will be made in the West Liberty cemetery.
