Henderson Happenings
Obituary of Henry Darnell

William Henry Darnell was born in Knox county, Illinois, January 10, 1840, and departed this life at his home in Henderson, Iowa, February 8th, 1916, at the age of seventy-six years.

He was married to Sarah Jane Hittle in Hamilton, Iowa, July 1st, 1862. To this union were born six children, Munson, Mattie, and Jessie having preceded their father in death. Those remaining are his two daughters, Melissa and Margaret of this place, and Jas. L. of Boulder, Colo., and his faithful and devoted wife whom we all know and love as Aunt Jane. Besides the immediate relatives there survives him two sisters, Mrs. D.H. Robinson, of Omaha, Nebr., and Mrs. Elizabeth Dowd of Marion County, Iowa, and three brothers, Mr. J.O. Darnell of Knoxville, Ia., Mr. Ellis Darnell of Bussey, Ia., and Mr. E.W. Darnell of Winside, Nebr.

The day following his marriage Mr. Darnell enlisted as a private in Company D, 36th Iowa infantry, serving his country 3 years and 26 days, at the close of which service he received an honorable discharge.

In 1871 the deceased came with his family to Mills County, Ia., where they have since resided in or near the town of Henderson.

Mr. Darnell untied with the Methodist Episcopal Church at this place in Feb. 1907. Five years later at this same church was celebrated the Golden Wedding of this pioneer couple.

About nine years ago the deceased was stricken with apoplectic seizure since which time he has been a constant but patient sufferer.

When in the prime of life Mr. Darnell was always found doing acts of kindness for his neighbors and friends, ever ready to share of his earthly goods with those in need.

Funeral was held at M.E. Church Henderson, Ia., Thursday afternoon, Feb. 10th, pastor of church officiating. Interment was made at Wesley Chapel.
