Prominent Citizen Departs

James S. Criswell, a man who had more than lived his three score and ten years, died at his home in Malvern Sunday.

He was a prominent and wealthy citizen, an early time settler, and always active in local and public affairs.

The funeral occurred Tuesday in the Methodist church at Malvern conducted by Rev. Black of the Methodist church.

The Eastern Star lodge members were present and took part in the funeral services in accordance with their ritual. A large delegation of ex-soldiers were present to pay a last tribute to their departed comrade.

County Officers Linville and Davis were in attendance as also C.P. Kinney together with others from Glenwood were present.

James S. Criswell was born in York county, Penn., April 2, 1837. In 1864 he was married to Mary J. McKinley. To this union were born eight children - the daughters Mrs. Jennie Strohl, Mrs. Abbie Bellwood, Mrs. Mattie Eacrett of Laurel, Mont., Misses Agnes and May. The sons are Robert, Stephen M., county auditor, and Charles, all residing in Mills county except Mrs. Eacrett. These, with the mother, survive the husband and father - his death being the first to visit the happy family circle.

In the days of the terrible civil war James S. Criswell joined Co. H 76th Penn. volunteers, and served, first one year, then re-enlisted and served two years and nearly seven months, until discharged at the close of the war. He was a faithful soldier and ever ready for all duties devolving upon him.

Thus, one of Mills county's best citizens has departed this life. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
