Malvern Leader
July 15, 1897

Dr. H.H. Black, formerly of Strahan, but for the past five years a patient of the hospital at Clarinda, died at that place last Friday. Mrs. Black and her children, who were visiting her parents at Keokuk, where they had been for some weeks, were at once notified and arrived home the first of the week. The remains arrived here from Clarinda on the Q Tuesday morning, and were at once taken in charge by the relatives and friends and conveyed to the Malvern cemetery, where after a brief service, conducted by Rev. Mr. Walburn, they were tenderly laid away.

The deceased was 49 years of age last February, and leaves a wife and three children, the youngest of whom is eight years old. He was a soldier of the late war, being a member of Co. D., 48th Inft. Iowa Volunteers. He was educated for the practice of medicine and up to the time mental misfortune overtook him maintained his family by practicing and teaching school. The bereft widow and children have the deepest sympathy of the warm hearted people of Strahan and vicinity.
