ACCIDENT AT EMERSON
Peter J. Lynn Run Over by Freight 73 and Fatally Injured.

Details of a shocking accident came to us from Emerson this week. It appears that last Saturday evening about 7:30 as Freight No. 73 was pulling out of Emerson, a man who had been beating his way and had put off the train, attempted to climb on again or under rather, for he attempted to grab the brake rod underneath so as to get on the trucks to ride. The train had got under good headway and the man missed his hold and fell under the wheels which crushed off both is legs and one arm. He was immediately picked up and taken to Dr. Stevenson's office and all was done for him that possibly could be done. He lingered until Monday morning dying about 10 o'clock.

He gave his name as Peter J. Lynn. He had come from New York, but had no home. His only relatives living were a couple of cousins in Philadelphia whom he had not heard from for several years. He was under the influence of liquor when the accident occurred and attached blame to no one but himself. He claimed he had been serving Uncle Sam in the Philippines, being a member of the 22nd Oregon under Lawton. He had ninety cents in money about him evidently out for a bum. The old soldiers took him in charge and took up a subscription and saw he was decently buried Monday afternoon in the Emerson Cemetery.

It was a deplorable accident and yet no blame can be attached to anyone but the man himself and the liquor he drank.
