Funeral services for Rachel Ann Haney, loving known as "Grandma" Haney by her 95 descendants, many more distant relatives, and a host of friends, were held in the James Funeral Home in Glenwood, Wednesday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. J. F. Stille of Council Bluffs, Iowa, a long time friend of the family, assisted by her pastor, Rev. H. C. Parker of the Glenwood Methodist Church. Local music for the service was furnished by the Misses Janice and Jessie Rodman with Mrs. Bert Colwell as pianist.
Rache Ann Ellis, daughter of Rolley Ellis and Margaret Hinton Penn was born at Ladoga, Indiana, May 2, 1854. There she grew to womanhood.
She came to Iowa with her parents by wagon train. In 1873, she was married to William S. Haney, the ceremony being performed at Mt. Etna, Iowa.
Sixty eight years ago, she came with her husband to Mills County near Glenwood, where they established their home.
To this union were born 10 children; James R. Haney, Cannonball, N. D.; Alva Haney of Glenwood; Charles E. Haney of Hollywood, Calif.; Wm. H. Haney of Kuna, Idaho; Golden Hunt of Coring, California; Maggie Horton and Wallace Haney of Glenwood Three preceded her in death, Bert, Roy, and Bell Haney.
There are 35 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren. These relatives and many friends cherish her memory.
Mrs. Haney experienced the hardships of pioneer life. Worked hard and faithfully to provide for and rear her family following the death of her husband.
Of late years, she has had a home in Glenwood, being cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Horton. Three weeks ago she suffered a heart attack and although everything was done for her that could be done, the time element had exacted its toll and she passed peacefully away Sunday morning, January 31st, 1943, at the age of 88 years, 8 months, and 29 days.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, War Mothers, and of the Methodist Church of Glenwood, joining the latter forty years ago under the pastorate of Rev. R. E. Shaw. Her faith remained firm to the end.
Those in charge of floral tributes were Mrs. Harry Ranne, Miss Clara Mayberry, Mrs. Oscar Lee, and Mrs. Herbert Bales.
This who served as pallbearers were Fred Mintle, J. R. Mintele, Morris Moore, Joe O'Neill, Bert Colwell, and L. D. Descon.
The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood Cemetery.
