ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES OVER THE BORDER
Dr. S. T. Brothers Born July 12, 1827
Died Jan 28,1906

Dr. S. T. Brothers of this place passed peacefully away Sunday afternoon while sitting in his chair, a short time after dinner. He had been in rather feeble health for past but was up and around the house every day and had a patient in to consult him just the day before. He ate his dinner as usual and after coming out in the sitting room sat down in his chair, expiring almost instantly the cause being heart failure.

Dr. Brothers was the oldest physician in point of service in the county at the time of his death having practiced medicine since 1853 and since 1866 in this county. He was in his prime one of the strongest physicians in this section
and well known to all the older settlers of the county. During the earlier years of his practice here he used to be called to nearly every part
of the county making most of his trips on horseback and never hesitating to go when needed or sent for. Many families now remember with grateful hearts the help he gave them in the
pioneer days. He gave freely of his skill and time to the poor and needy as well as those able to pay. In fact he was one of the honorable, upright gentlemen of the old school and considered that his profession was for the good of humanity. Dr. Brothers was born in Carroll county, Ohio, July 12, 1827. He begun the practice of medicine in Malvern, Ohio, in 1853. In 1854 he was married to Eves Ann Graham who departed this life April 9, 1901, To them were eight children, seven of whom survive them and were here to attend the funeral. They, are Mrs. H. H. Smith of Superior, Wis.: Dr. H. D. Brothers of Agra, Kansas, Ralph N. of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. D. E Whitfield, Chas. R, Alice and Rebecca Brothers of this city. Dr Brothers came to Glenwood in 1866 and the following year located
at White Cloud which was then a thriving inland town. In 1869 Malvern had been started and he decided to locate and moved his residence up from White Cloud to where it now stands. Dr. Brothers helped to name the new town and induced them to give the name of Malvern which was his old Ohio home. The house he moved here is part of the house in which he died. He has resided here continously since 1860. A few years ago he retired from active practice but has continued an office practice to some extent with his old patients who refused to give him up and one of whom came to see him Monday not having heard of his death.

ln early life-he united with the Bethlehem Presbyterian church at Malvern, Ohio, and was one of the charter members of the Malvern Presbyterian
church when it was organized in 1872. In 1884 and 1885 he served in the, Iowa legislature as representative from this county with honor and distinction returning to his practice and work after his time expired. The funeral occurred at the late residence Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. A. E. Kiser of the Presbyterian church after which the Masonic Order, of which he ' was a
member took charge continuing the services at the cemetery. A large concourse of his old friends and neighbors assembled to do honor to his memory and many beautiful floral emblems were brought by loving friends, His fellow physicians; Dr. Campbell, Parson and Scott of this place, Dewitt and Donsian of Glenwood, and Agan of Silver City, acted as pall bearers. We can truly say a good man is gone.
