David Samuel McDOWELL, a resident of Clay County, S.D. since 1909, died Thursday
evening at the Harry Almbery home on Elm Street. Mr McDOWELL had lived for many years on
West Main street, but after his son Clarence went to California with the national guard, he was
cared for at the Almberg home.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Elmore funeral home. Rev. W.C.
Daniels of the Baptist church conducted the services. Burial was in Bluff View cemetery.
Mr. McDOWELL was born on January 20, 1858 at Angola, Indiana. In 1864 he came west with
an ox team and settled at Glenwood, Iowa. In 1866 he was married to Lucy Hipsher, the faithful
wife who lived with him until her death February 3, 1938.
In 1909 the family came to Clay County, living on a farm for a few years and later moving into
Vermillion.
Mr McDOWELL is survived by his son Clarence and two brothers, Wilson B. of Fairfax, S.D.
and Charles E. of Greeley, Colorado and one sister Mrs. May Napier of Sloan, Iowa. Both of
the brothers and sister were here for the funeral services.
