Z. T. Granteer of Hastings Dies from Stroke on Saturday

Lived in Iowa 85 Years; Funeral Held Monday Afternoon

Zachary T. Granteer, one of the pioneer residents of the neighborhood northwest of Hastings, suffered a stroke of paralysis at his home last Thursday evening from which he was unable to rally and passed away Saturday morning.

Mr. Granteer had spent practically his entire life in that vicinity and was well known to all the older people and many others who honored and respected him.

Funeral services were held in the late home Monday afternoon and were largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Rev. R. E. Nesbitt conducted the service and a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Fickel, Mrs. Clinton Parker and C. E. Wilson, with Mrs. Wilson as accompanist, sang. He was buried in the Cotton cemetery near his late home.

The following obituary was given:

After a brief illness, following a paralytic stroke, Zachary Taylor Granteer loosed his hold on temporal life and slipped away to man's inevitable end, closing a long and useful life of more than 87 years. His death occurred at his farm home north of Hastings early Saturday morning, January 11, 1936.

Mr. Granteer was the son of Henry and Hannah Rogers Granteer. His birth occurred September 20, 1848 in Bradford county, Pennsylvania. When two years of age he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Monroe county. In his young manhood days he came to Mills county. A few years later he established a farm home north of Hastings which became his permanent home.

In January, 1876, he was united to Emma Cotton. To this union were born four children: Herman Ray, Hastings; Daisy (Mrs. L. C. Genung), Atkinson, Nebraska; Ida Anetta (Mrs. I. A. Demmel), Fort Collins, Colorado; Lucretia (Mrs. Bert Babbitt), Ortonville, Minnesota. After a few brief years this union was broken by the untimely death of the wife and mother. Her death occurred in 1884.

On August 19, 1886 occurred Mr. Granteer's marriage to Olive Jane Peterson, who assumed the role of mother to his small children. Two other children came to bless this second union: Doris, who died at the age of seven, and Dotty (Mrs. Gerald Young), Albert Lea, Minnesota. The five children constitute the only immediate survivors of their aged father, Mrs. Granteer having preceded him 13 years ago. In their bereavement they are joined by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren,

Mr. Granteer was a well-loved neighbor whose advice was sought y many in diverse difficulties. His human sympathy found expression in generous financial and personal assistance to those in need. In his home and community he carried a good name.
