OPINION TRIBUNE
DATED JANUARY 24, 1946Residents of Glenwood and Mills county were saddened on hearing of the death of Mr. Henry H. Dean, Thursday, Jan. 17. Mr. Dean, a civil engineer of Mills county, Pottawattamie county, and in private business.
Mr. Dean was especially known and given statewide honors and recognition for his interest and fine work in the interest of Masonry. Entering the Mt. Gerizim Chapter No. 59, Glenwood in 1910 and on his 21st birthday, he rose through the ranks until he attained the station of most Excellent Grand High Priest of the State Grand Chapter.
Active in community affairs, Mr. Dean was past president of the Glenwood Rotary club, a member of the Eastern Star, and a faithful follower of the Baptist faith.
Married to Miss Mary Paulus of Iowa City in 1911, two children and his wife survive. An only son, Robert, has recently returned to Glenwood from war service, and a daughter, Betty (Mrs. George Ludwig), is living at the parental home until the return of Mr. Ludwig from foreign duty in the armed forces. One grandchild, Barbara Lynne, is the daughter of Mrs. Ludwig.
Funeral services for the deceased were held from James chapel with Dr. F.W. Long and Rev. W. E. Prewitt officiating. Music was furnished by Mr. W. C. Lugsch, soloist, and Mrs. Virginia Gillilland, pianist.
Flower bearers were Nell McCluskey, Corita DeLashmutt, Gertrude Workmsn, Leona Mickelwait, Florence Rathke, Rosella Daniel, Renee Buffington, and Anna Mickelwait.
Casket bearers were Mr. W. C. Rathke, Mr. Frank Logan, Mr. Ernest DeLashmutt, Mr. H. F. Anderson, Mr. Grover Mickelwait, Mr. D. D. Wheeler, Mr. F. J. Wallace, and Mr. Gerald Fickel.
Ivanhoe Commandery No. 17 of Council Bluffs served as honorary escort and Masonic rites were held by the grand Lodge of Iowa A. F. and A. M., the Mount Gerizin Chapter No. 59, and the Blue Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 58.
Internment was at Glenwood cemetery.
The obituary follows:
On August 9, 1886, a son was born to Seth and Annah Dean at Glenwood, and was christened Henry Herman Dean. Mr. Dean attended school in Glenwood and graduated with the class of 1905. He received his training as a Civil Engineer at the University of Iowa, graduating with the class of 1910. He has followed his profession since that time, serving as County Engineer of both Mills and Pottawattamie counties, the state budget department, as well as the government in the capacity of Supervising Engineer at Ottumwa and Inspecting Engineer at Perry.
He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Paulus of Iowa City in 1911. Two children are Robert Dean of Glenwood and Betty (Mrs. George Ludwig) of Montgomery, Ala., temporarily in Glenwood. One grandchild is Betty Lynne Ludwig.
Raised to the Sublime Degree in the Glenwood Masonic Lodge in 1907, Mr. Dean served as Worshipful Master in 1916 and 1917. Exalted to the Most Sublime Degree of the Royal Arch in 1910. He also served as Excellent High Priest for the year 1921.
He was greeted as Select Master in Glenwood council No. 14 in 1910, and served as Illustrious Master in 1919. Knighted in Ivanhoe Commandery No. 17, Council Bluff, in 1918, he presided as Eminent Commander in 1924.
After having served as Deputy Custodian for a number of years, he was elected Custodian in 1922 and served the Grand Chapter in that capacity until 1932. He progressed steadily through the chairs until he reached the station of Most Excellent Grand High Priest and served in that capacity in 1937 and 1938.
Mr. Dean died Jan. 27, 1946 and was buried in Glenwood cemetery after services Jan. 19 from James Chapel.
