DEATHS
Garrett V. Hubbell
Ye wheels of nature, speed your course!
Ye mortal powers, decay!
Fast as ye bring the night of death
Ye bring eternal day.

On last Friday, March 9, this fine old pioneer and veteran enjoyed his 91st birthday amidst his comrades. He seemed as well as one could expect for one who had reached that ripe age. He kept about as usual for the next two days, and on Monday had come down town. He felt wome wearied and retired early. The next morning he did not feel like getting up and remained in bed. Near the noon hour his condition became such that his daughter, Mrs. L.W. Lambert, was called. Shortly after noon he passed into a comatose state and about 4:30 o'clock "the weary wheels of life stood still" and the soul of G.V. Hubbell took its departure from its tenement of clay. No physical suffering attended the passing of this pioneer and goodly man.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Holiness church, conducted by Rev. Howard Mintle.

A complete obituary will appear in Monday's Tribune.

Garrett V. Hubbell was born in Shelby county, O., March 9, 1826, and died in Glenwood, Ia., March 13, 1917, aged 91 years and 4 days.

At the age of 18 he took up the trade of potter in Piqua, O. He followed this occupation until 1855, when he came to Iowa, and first located in Poweshiek county to Jasper county and later went to Davis county, Mo., remaining there three years. He then came to Dallas county, Ia., and here enlisted in Company C, 39th Iowa Infantry. He served in this company but a short time when discharged for disability.

He then returned to Ohio and at once enlisted in Company K, 14th Ohio infantry. In this company he saw service in the battles of Tunnel Hill, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Burnt Hickory and many others in which his company was engaged. He sustained injuries during his services that remained with him through life. He was honorable discharged at Louisville, Ky., July 1865.

On September 8, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Bogart of Miami county, O. To this union twelve children were born, six of whom survive the father. These children are J. Reeder Hubbell, Glenwood; Mrs. Asa Lambert, Glenwood; John J. Hubbell, Holmesville, Neb.; Mrs. L.W. Lambert, Mrs. Alvin E. Dean, and Charles Hubbell, all of Glenwood.

Besides these children he leaves a widow, now 85 years of age, and who has been his helpmeet for 65 years.

In former years he held membership in the United Brethren Brethren church, but after coming to Glenwood he joined the Holiness church, of which he was a faithful member, and at many times he had expressed the desire that when he was called to give up this life that the funeral services should be conducted at this church.

Funeral services were held at the Holiness church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Howard Mintle, the pastor. Burial was in the Glenwood cemetery.

The out of town relatives at the funeral were the son, J.J. Hubbell, and wife of Holmesville, Neb.; granddaughter, Mrs. L.V. Davis, Sedgwick, Colo.; nephew, G.M. Hubbell, and wife, Harlan, Ia.; nephew, M.W. Hubbell, and sons Albert and Edgar, Bartlett, Ia.

Father, our dear Father,
We will miss you that is true,
But we never, oh, no, never,
Will forget the lessons taught by you.

Father, you are not dead, but only sleeping,
While we linger here and sigh,
And our hearts are sad and heavy:
But we'll meet you bye and bye.
---------------
Card of Thanks.
We want to extend our heartfelt thankfulness to the many friends who so kindly assisted us, in performing kindly deeds and lending helping hands, in the short illness and death of our beloved husband and father; especially to Rev. Howard Mintle for getting the Holiness church in readiness for the funeral services, and to all that sent the beautiful floral tokens and especially those from his old comrades.--Mrs. G.V. Hubbell and children.
