From the Opinion Tribune dated 07-18-1946:

Elmer Roy Boyce was born May 6, 1896 at Folsom, Iowa in Oak Township, and has lived in Mills county all his life. He served in the first World War, enlisting o April 28, 1917 in Co. I, 168th Inf., Rainbow Division. He went overseas in Nov. 1917 and took part in seven battles. On July 28th, 1918 he as gassed near Sergy, France. He wore the Purple Heart, Victory Medal, and the Presidential Citation. He spend some time in the army of occupation, and received his honorable discharge on May 17th, 1919.

On April 3rd, 1929 he was united in marriage to Estella Benedict of Glenwood. To this union were born two children, Ross of Glenwood, and Betty Maxine at home. Until four years ago they made their home on the farm northwest of Glenwood. At that time the family moved to town and he was employed by the State highway Commission at the Mills County yards.

He was a faithful member of the American Legion and the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 97. His friends are numbered by all who knew him. He passe away suddenly Wednesday July 10, 1946 at 10:15 p.m. at his home, of coronary heart trouble at the age of 50 years, 2 months and 4 days.

He leaves to mourn his untimely passing, his wife Estella, one son Ross of Glenwood, one daughter, Betty Maxine at home; his mother, Mrs. Effie Boyce, Glenwood; four brothers, Ernest of Silver City, Ferdinand, Glenwood, Charles, Omaha and Robert , Great Lakes, Ill.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Norman Benedict, Emerson, Ia., Mrs. Ivan White, Glenwood and Mrs. Walter Nobell, Seattle, Wash. Several nieces and nephews and host of friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 13, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. J. F. Stille officiating, Rev. Stille being a friend of the family for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Griffiths of Council Bluffs furnished the music. The flower bearers were Mrs. Keith Bruce, Mrs. Leo May, Mrs. Irene White, Mrs. Lyle Williams. The pallbearers were Emer Hatcher, Jess Hunter, Perry Bayes, Oscar Lee, Warren Sawyers, Frank Logan, Robert Caley, Reuben Stille.

The Honorary Societies attending in a body were The American Legion and the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 97, also the Highway Commission Employees of Mills County Station.

The Grave salute was given by the American Legion Harvey T. Rimal Post No. 141, B. N. Maxwell as Chaplain. Volley was given Head Quarters Co. Iowa State Guard. Taps by Merrill Moore and Claire Davis. Burial was made in the Glenwood cemetery.
