Mrs. Charles Lee Epperson, one of the early pioneers of Mills County, died Sunday evening at 5:40 at her home southwest of Glenwood in Lyons township, aged 71 years and past. Death resulted from pneumonia and her illness was brief. She was taken sick the Monday before with a severe cold, and this quickly developed into something more serious.

The funeral was held from the home this Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, and was conducted by Elder J. F. Mintun of Des Moines. Burial took place in the Glenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Epperson enjoyed the distinction of being one of the earliest settlers in Mills County. She came here with her parents in 1841, and had resided continuously in the county for 64 years. Her maiden name was Ophelia Arthusa Harrington and her people settled with others down in the Egypt neighorhood near Bartlett.

She was born Dec. 20, 1838, in Oswego county New York, and was united in marriage on Aug. 16, 1860, to Mr. Epperson. Had she been spared till next August the couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Five children were born to them, one of which, Clara Lenna, died at the age of six weeks. The four surviving children are David Elias Epperson, Charles Guy Epperson and Mrs. Anne Effie Hunter, all of Mills County, and Jonathan Roy Epperson of Des Moines. The husband also survives. The family have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
