HAYES, ACHTERHOF, HANKS, HALEY, KRAEMER

Blaine C. Hayes, age 84, of Longmont, Colo., formerly of Glenwood, died April 14, 2006 at his home. Cremation will take place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Longmont. A graveside service and inurnment will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2006 at Glenwood Cemetery. Pastor Doug Achterhof will officate the service. Family and friends are welcome to join the family at the Glenwood American Legion for lunch following the graveside service.

Mr. Hayes was born June 19, 1921 in Glenwood to Edwin and Manila (Hanks) Hayes. He attended school in Glenwood and Council Bluffs. After World War II, he attended Milo Bennett School in Indiana to study linotype.

He served in the Iowa National Guard and was called to active duty with the U.S. Army before Pearl Harbor. He was captured in North Africa and spent 801 days as a Prisoner of War and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He married Alice L. Haley on Nov. 30, 1947 in Glenwood. He worked in Maxwell and Glenwood for local newspapers. He was then hired by Ray Lanyon to work at the Daily Times-Call in 1952. He worked first as a linotype operator and retired as vice president of production in 1986.

Mr. Hayes moved to Longmont in December 1952 from Glenwood. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Longmont. He was also a member of the Glenwood Masonic Lodge #58 for over 50 years, the Rocky Mountain Consistory, El Jebel Shrine, John Harold Buckley Post 32, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Longmont Shrine Club. He was a former member of the M & M Dance Club. Mr. Hayes spent 13 winters in Arizona and enjoyed golf, gardening and jazz music.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Larry Kraemer; one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife of Longmont; a daughter, Christine Kraemer of Longmont; one aunt and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
