Glenwood Iowa Feb. 5, 1909

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Knowles on Saturday, one fine 11 pound baby girl.

J.F. Record has placed a new walk along the north side of his block, which is a material improvement.

Samuel Kiskadon, of Malvern, and Addison S. Paul, of Henderson, have each been granted a pension of $6 per month.

Mr. Ned Empke and Miss Francis Bowman of Council Bluffs, and Miss Gertrude Taylor of Maine, were guests of Miss Ella Hanson. yesterday.

Mrs. George Gwathmey who was called to Emerson by the death of Mrs. Boswell, has decided to remain there for the present, at the home of her brother, Mr. A.P. Boswell, and will probably make Emerson her permanent place of residence. Mrs. Gwathmey has lived in Glenwood the past thirty years and her many friends will regret to hear of her contemplated removal.

While our adjutant General Byers was in attendance at the Iowa day exercise at Omaha he had the misfortune to have his pockets picked while riding on a motor car. His pocketbook was stolen in which was about $35 in cash and also some valuable papers.

Tuesday was pension day with Herb Potter and a continuous string of old soldiers filed into his office all day long with vouchers to be acknowledged.

Now that Mills County fruit growers have determined to make a display at the Omaha Exposition, let everyone take hold and make it a grand success. If you have some particularly fine specimens bring them to the committee at Glenwood. W.H.H. Callen will receive and forward all fruit brought to him.

The petit jury was summoned to court yesterday, being drawn on the chicken stealing case. The jurors included the following: C.W. Gilmore, K.M. Goodell, G.M. Sickler, William Jens, G. Walling, J.C. McCoy, Glenwood; J.W. Thorp, T.J. Murphy, Pacific Junction; Chas. Goode, Tabor; P.J. Plumb, Hillsdale; G.O. Mitchell, Hastings; Ralph Salmon, L.T. Morris, Emerson; Geo. W., Conrad, Strahan. Later in the day the jury was excused until Friday morning of next week when the trial of the Hastings bank robbers will begin.

The residence of Jay Hughes who lives one mile south of Glenwood was destroyed by fire Tuesday night about 9:00. Mrs. Hughes was alone in the house at the time and was able to save but a few of the household effects. The house was almost a total loss.

Mr. and Mrs. Kinney of Emerson are visiting this week with their son, Auditor Kinney.

Mrs. A. R. Candle will preach next Monday at the Christian Church in the absence of Elder Candle who goes to Mondamin to hold a short meeting. He will speak on things of popular interest to all.

DR. A.S. Campbell, of Malvern and Dr. R.W. Whitnall of Hastings, were in Glenwood yesterday at the monthly meeting of the U.S. pension examiners. Two applicants were before the board for examination. Alex Powell of Bethlehem and Moses Weaver of Strahan.

A.C. Calkins and family of Des Moines have removed to Glenwood and are occupying the Oaks property on Hazel street. Mr. Calkins is an organizer of the "Brotherhood of American Yoemen," a fraternal insurance agency. The OPINION trusts their stay in Glenwood may be pleasant and profitable.

DR. M.H. McCluskey has received word of the death of a brother at Healdsburg, Cala., with whom his son Will McCluskey, has been stopping for some little time past. The brother was a single man and left a large and valuable estate.In order to properly look after the matter the Dr. left yesterday for Healdsburg, being accompanied by his brother, S.M. McCluskey of Maryville, Mo.

Hanna and Mickelwait's met with quite a mishap yesterday. Clyde Hanna was just starting out on his rounds when a new horse they had hitched to the vehicle got scared at something and ran away. The frightened animal dashed into a team on the bridge near J.E. Scott's, resulting in a general mix up of man and beast, milk and milk cans. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, but the milk cart was pretty badly used up.
