Miss Hite was taken down only a week ago, and her untimely death is a terrible blow to her parents and other relatives at Gilman. Clarence Hite, younger son of J.A. Hite and wife, who was attacked with scarlet fever, but now has a complication of dropsy, is very low and his life is despaired of. (Evening times-Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, February 05, 1907,)

HITE

Vera Viola Hite was born December 31, 1891, near Gilman and has spent her short life in and near Gilman. On January 27 she was taken sick with scarlet fever and later in the week inflammatory rhuematism set in, and all was done that loved ones and medical aid could do, but at noon Sunday, February 3, 1907, she passed away "and the spirit returned unto God who gave it," she being 15 years, 1 month and 3 days old. She leaves to mourn her death father and mother and one brother. Rev. Geo. R. Chambers read a part of the fourteenth chapter of St. John and offered prayer at the gate Monday, after which the remains were laid at rest in the Prairie View Cemetery. The funeral sermon will be preached in the near future at the Congregational church. She will be sadly missed in the Sabbath school and by her classmates and associates and in the home, for her cheerful and happy disposition loved and felt by all. Her last message to her loved ones was that she was going away; she would not stay long, for mamma would be very lonely without her and that papa must come after her. We cannot wish her back for we can go to her, but she cannot return to us, soon the summons will come to each one. Let us watch and be ready for we know neither the day nor the hour wherein the son of man cometh (source unknown).
