Lawrence "Babe" Clayton Wagner, 82, father of Nancy (Wagner) Hemphill and her husband, Don, of Newton, died at his home SUnday, Nov. 2.

The body was cremated, and at his request, there will be no service. Memorials will be accepted to the Marshall County Animal Rescue League.

The son of Isaac and Jenny (Weaver) Wagner, he was born March 20, 1921, in Marshalltown. After completing his education, he worked as a fireman and later an engineer for the M & St. L. Railroad that later was called the Chicago Northwestern. He retired after 30 years of service. On May 18, 1943, he married Pearl E. Himes in Peoria, Ill. He was a life member of the YMCA, where he taught swimming and worked as a life guard. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers, currently known as the United Transportation Union.

As a youth, Mr. Wagner enjoyed sports, including competitive swimming, roller-skating and boxing. He won the 1942 Golden Gloves Boxing Championship in Des Moines. He was a longtime member of the Democratic party. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, his computer, watching boxing and baseball and his dogs.

Survivors include his wife; his daughter, Nancy E. Hemphill of Newton and Sally A. Carpenter of Des Moines; two sons-in-law, five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald Talmon Wagner, a son, Donald Lawrence Wagner and a grandson. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Fri 7 Nov 2003.
