Old-Time Colored Woman of City Dies at Carbon Cliff, Ill.

Miss Jessie Walker arrived home Saturday evening from Davenport, where she was called to attend the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Sarah Wright, who died Tuesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mitchell at Carbon Cliff, Ill., where she had gone on a visit a few weeks before. Since the death of her husband a few years ago Mrs. Wright had made her home in Davenport with her son Fred. Mrs. Wright's death was due to leakage of the heart and asthma. Mrs. Wright was one of the best known colored women of this city. She was the widow of Richard J. Wright, an old-time barber of this city, who died May 1, 1914. Mrs. Wright had lived here since the latter '60s. Mrs. Wright was born Sarah Walker in Richmond, Ky., Dec. 28, 1852. She was united in marriage with Mr. Wright May 4, 1869. Mrs. Wright had been an evangelist of the African Methodist church in Iowa for many years, and was formerly pastor of the church here. She was also a member of the Iowa Holiness Association. Surviving Mrs. Wright are two sons and a daughter. The older son, Herbert R. Wright, has been for almost eight years United States consul at Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, and prior to that time was for four years consul at Utila, Honduras. He is now about to return to this country owing to failing health. The younger son, C. F. Wright, has been at Davenport for several years. The daughter. Mrs. Myrtle Hopson, is a patient in the county hospital. Four daughters are dead. They were Stella. Blanche, and Ruth, who died in childhood, and Flossie. who became Mrs. L. S. Burt, and died at Clinton Jan. 27. 1908. A brother, Owen Walker, lives at Plattsburg, Mo. Following the funeral services, which were held at Davenport Friday afternoon. the body was placed in a receiving vault, and after the return of Herbert Wright to this country will be brought to this city for interment in the family lot in Riverside.
