Opal (Mohr) Zesch, 100, took her final journey home on September 2, 2012, where she joined her beloved husband of 72 years.

Born at home on June 28, 1912 in rural Marshall County, IA; she was the last surviving sibling of the long-lived Mohr family. She was raised on the family farmstead and attended Ferguson Consolidated School. Opal married Ernest Zesch in 1931, lived and farmed in the Ferguson area before moving to Des Moines in 1936, but still keeping their hearts and purse strings tied to the Ferguson area for many years by farming cooperatively with Lynn Zesch, nephew, and Brian Runner and Brian Mowrer, grand-nephews, as well as being founding members of the Greencastle Recreation Area.

Devoted member of Ferguson Bible Church and Galilee Baptist Church (Des Moines), her faith defined and guided her path. An unfailing life partner, mother, homemaker extraordinaire, avid gardener, seamstress, community volunteer, Sunday school teacher, animal lover, occasional promotional model for TV, billboards, vendor cards and print media; a resource for BH&G cake decorating. And, finally, her blessed hands nursed Ernest for five difficult years. If you asked her to do it, it got done.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Stratton of Valencia, CA and Julia Livers of Des Moines; three grandchildren: Kevin Stratton of Valencia, CA, Arlyn Morris of Altoona, IA and Nancy Jackman of Sagle, ID; and eight great-grandchildren: Lauren, Jonathan and Rachel Stratton of Valencia, CA, and Austin, Miriam, Amanda and Melissa Morris of Altoona, IA.

Visitation: Wednesday, September 5, 5 – 7 p.m., at Grandview Park Funeral Home, 3211 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 6. Interment: 1:30 p.m., Graceland Cemetery, Laurel, IA.
