MITCHELLVILLE – Funeral services for Kenneth Hanke, 68, of Mitchellville, a prominent Jasper County resident, were held today, Nov. 26, at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.

The Rev. Ted Hatten, pastor of Mitchellville United Methodist Church, conducted service. Burial was in Mitchellville Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society or Jasper County Hospice will be accepted.

He died Friday at his home.

Survivors are a son, Larry of San Leandro, Calif.; three daughters, Virginia (Mrs. Bob) Underwood of Mitchellville, Bonnie (Mrs. Bud) Herbold of Marshalltown and Sue Hanke of Brainard, Minn.; five grandchildren; and his mother and stepfather, Marie and Hubert Pearson of Mitchellville.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Hanke, a recipient of the 1988 Governor’s Volunteer Service award, was a member of the Oldfield Post No. 155 American Legion of Mitchellville and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

He was an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II.

A member of the Jasper County Fair Board, Mr. Hanke was a former member of the Colfax School Board and Jasper County 4-H Committee.

Mr. Hanke, a custodian in the Colfax Schools for 13 years, was a retired dairy farmer.

The son of Alvah and Marie Lamb Hanke, he was born July 17, 1922 in Des Moines. He was graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1940 and attended Drake University in Des Moines for two years.

He was married to Eleanor Walter at Shreveport, La. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, November 23, 1990
