DeeCort Hammitt, 86, of Marshalltown, died early Friday morning, March 13, 2009. Graveside memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Riverside Cemetery Chapel. Inichement will be in the Riverside Columbarium. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to either the American Heart Association or to the Parkinson’s Research Foundation. DeeCort Hammitt Jr. was born on February 9, 1923, in Alcester, South Dakota. He was the son of DeeCort and Bessie Hammitt. He graduated from Alcester High School and Augustana College. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1943-1945. On April 26, 1949, he married Joanne Bierwirth in Burke, South Dakota. The couple lived in South Dakota and then moved to Marshalltown. DeeCort worked at Lennox in the research lab working with air handling. He then started his own business, 13th Street Vacuum, in the early 1970’s. He sold the business and retired in 1995. DeeCort is survived by his wife, Joanne, of Marshalltown; his two children, DeeCort Hammitt, III of San Francisco, CA, and Kim Hammitt of Marshalltown; his grandson, Jagger, and his wife, Jessica, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his 3 great-grandchildren; and his 3 brothers. In death, he has rejoined his parents, his 4 brothers, and his 3 sisters.
