Helen Luethje Gillespie, age 98 of Gladbrook, passed away Friday, February 13, 2009 at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 16, 2009 at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook with Rev. Robert Doner officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Goettsch Funeral Home in Gladbrook with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00. Burial will be in Crystal Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at vogelfuneralhomes.com. Goettsch Funeral Home in Gladbrook is entrusted with arrangements.
Helen was born August 11, 1910, in Tama County, the daughter of Henry and Anna Rohwer Arp. She attended the country school through the eighth grade and in 1927, Helen was united in marriage to Harry Luethje. He preceded her in death in 1962. There were three children to this union. In 1965, Helen was united in marriage to William Gillespie. Bill preceded her in death in 2005. Helen was an avid crotchetier, making afghans for her family and she enjoyed playing cards with her friends
Helen was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and the American Legion Auxiliary and Afternoon Women’s Fellowship.

Helen will be missed by her son Dennis (Barb) Luethje of Gladbrook, daughter-in-law, Mary Luethje of Gladbrook, step children, Kay Shope of West Des Moines, Gene Gillespie of Texas, and Bob Gillespie of Marshalltown, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great great-grandchildren, sisters, Vannetta Sievers of Unionville, Eunice Pieper and Marian Schulz both of Gladbrook.

Helen was preceded in death by her son, Leonard in 1996, daughter Darlene Toland in 1990, sister, Ellen Hadechek, brothers, Rueben, Clarence, Milo, and Roy Arp and granddaughter, Susan Luethje in 2000.
