Cyrus (Cy) H. Bryngelson, 102, of the Iowa Veterans Home, died peacefully Sunday, February 15, 2009. A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 20 at Malloy LRC at the Iowa Veterans Home with Rev. Jim Bonser and Chaplain Craig Nelson officiating. Memorial may be directed to Iowa Hospice, Iowa River Hospice or the charity of your choice.
Cy was born January 18, 1907 near Dunbar, Iowa to Henry and Amelia Norland Bryngelson. He homesteaded with his family in Elrose, Saskatchewan, Canada. He also lived in Seattle, Washington for 7 yrs. and in Whittier and Long Beach, California for 16 years. He returned to Iowa in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1942. After 3 years he was discharged and awarded the Bronze Star.
On July 10, 1942 he married Eleanor Tucker of Boston, MA. and returned to Iowa in 1945. Together they operated the Dunbar General Store for 9 years, a Coffee Shop and the local telephone office in Dunbar. He also ran the Conoco Gas Station and was a school bus driver for Dunbar Consolidated School. He also worked for the Marshalltown Western Auto Store and later Jensen Ford for 10 years. After retiring, they moved to Le Grand in 1974 and then to the Iowa Veterans Home in 1985. He was a member of the Stavanger Friends Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Cy will be remembered for his charming manner, thoughtfulness, his wonderful smile, his sharp wit, sense of humor, generosity and his ability to become everyone’s friend.
He is survived by nieces, Clarice (Wes) Roseland of rural Marshalltown and Linda (Marvin) Marks of California, six great nephews and four great nieces and several great, great nieces and nephews. Also surviving is the Newell & Jean Drury family, who adopted him as a “grandpa” in his latter years and many, many friends and acquaintances from IVH and the surrounding area.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Eleanor in 1995, and two sisters, Mabel (Mrs. Clarence) Carlson in 2005 and Helen (Mrs. William) Marks in 2008.
