William E. “Bill” Best Sr., age 82 of Marshalltown, passed away, Monday, February 16, 2009 at Grandview Heights in Marshalltown. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 20, at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Marshalltown with Father Don Czapla officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service with a luncheon to follow the service. Private family burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Mystic at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at vogelfuneralhomes.com. Pursel Davis Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements.
Bill was born January 24, 1927 in Mystic, Iowa, the son of Monford and Jennie Vandewyngaerd Best. He was raised and educated in Mystic leaving school to join the Merchant Marines until 1948 when he joined the Army. Bill was a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. On June 27, 1997, Bill was united in marriage to Geraldine Watson at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown.
Bill was the general manager of General Distributing Beverage Co. of Oregon City, Oregon for over 12 years retiring in 1992 and moving to Mystic. For several years, he was a beer salesman for Olympia Beer in Nevada.
In 2004, he became a bus driver for Marshalltown Schools and retired after failing health.
Bill was a self educated avid reader who also enjoyed the Yankees and Green Bay Packers and getting together with his coffee group at OJ’s diner. He was a staunch Republican.
Bill will be missed his wife Geraldine, sons, William Best, Jr., and John (Kari) Best, both of Des Moines, stepchildren, Mark (Peggy) Watson of Marshalltown, Jeffrey (Mari) Watson of Marshalltown, Kathleen (Pat) Huelman of Lino Lakes, MN, Daniel Watson of Marshalltown, Laura Arterburn of State Center, Theodore (Christine) of Burnsville, MN, 4 nephews, 3 nieces, 3 grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister Dorothy Zaputil.
