Glenn W. Walters, 92, of the Iowa Veterans Home, died Monday, February 23rd, 2009. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday morning. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home or the charity of the donor’s choice. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been caring for Glenn and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Glenn Willard Walters was born on January 15, 1917, in Malcolm, Iowa. He was the son of William and Frieda (Soukop) Walters. He was educated in the area of his birth. He served our country honorably in the US Army from 1940-1945 during World War II. He was ranked as a Corporal in the Thunderbolt Battalion. He fought at Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, and Kasserine Pass, serving in Sicily, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and North Africa. On July 30, 1949, he married June Albrecht in Davenport, Iowa. Glenn worked at Engleharts, Bear Manufacturing, Bendix Corporation, Eagle Signal, and Occidental Chemical. Glenn lived most of his life in Bettendorf, Iowa. He was raised on a farm and hunted and trapped game as a young man and he loved the Mississippi River, collecting many Indian artifacts from its shores. He also had an affection for dogs all of his life and was a very active boater for half of his life. He enjoyed building sets for the Bettendorf Children’s Theatre, where his wife, June, was the director for many years. Glenn is survived by his wife of 59 years, June; his son, Robert G.(Sharon) Walters of Coal Valley, IL; his four grandchildren, Michael(Karyn) Walters of Davenport, IA, Melinda(Brant) Hulsebus of Rockford, IL, Robert E. Walters of Davenport, IA, and Thomas J.(Jessica) Walters of Milwaukee, WI; and his eight great-grandchildren.
