In 1951, the family moved to Branson, MO, where they had a dairy. Dale graduated from Branson High School, and then went into the US Army for 2 years, serving in Germany. After finishing military obligations, he started college on the GI Bill at William Penn in Oskaloosa. His family lived in Oskaloosa after moving back to Iowa. At Penn, he met and married Shirley Scott. They later divorced. He graduated from college in 1960 and began his teaching career, teaching 18 years at North Winneshiek School. While there, they purchased the family farm and raised livestock. He received his Master’s degree from Drake University in 1969. When Dale’s mother passed away, the two things that he wanted to remember her by was an old pan that she used for cooking oatmeal every morning and the popcorn popper. Those things meant “family and good times” to him. On June 26, 1994, Dale married Marcia Shaver. Together they continued the Mysha Herd which had been established by her father, Noran Shaver. He enjoyed working with the cattle in all aspects, especially showing. Because of his interest, the Mysha Herd continued and were represented at the Iowa State Fair this year, the 80th year since the cattle were first shown there, missing only the 2 war years when there was not a fair. Dale served 2 elected terms on the AMSS board of directors, serving on the executive committee. He bred and raised the National Champion, Mysha Lady Di.
