Mrs. Collins Succumbs to Infirmities of Age

Mrs. P. L. Collins, an old resident of Marshall County, passed away at 9:30 o’clock Thursday night at her home in Taylor Township, Mrs. Collins had been in failing health for several months and death was due in infirmities of age.

Mrs. Collins was born Rebecca H. Carter, daughter of John and Hannah Stanley Carter, at Mooresville, Ind., Oct. 18, 1846. She was a birthright member of the Friends church.

The family came to Iowa in 1863 in a covered wagon, after the death of Mr. Carter, and settled on the farm where she died, long known as the old Carter homestead. She moved to Albion in 1870 and attended Grinnell College, from which she was graduated in 1873. Later for several years she taught school in Marshall, Hardin and Story counties.

She was married to Phillip L. Collins, in Marshalltown, March 21, 1891, when they moved to the Carter homestead, where Mrs. Collins made her home for 45 years. Mr. and Mrs. Collins would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on March 21.

Surviving are Mr. Collins, four sons, Paul H., John Louis and Walter P. Collins, all of Taylor township, and U. Bernye Collins of Gladbrook, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Estel funeral home, in charge of Rev. C. F. Byrd, pastor of the Friends church, following a prayer service at 1 o’clock at the home north of the city. The body will be at the funeral home until Sunday morning, when it will be removed to the family home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca Collins were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Estel funeral home, in charge of Rev. C. D. Byrd, pastor of the Friends church, following a short service at the home at 1 o’clock. The pallbearers were Wayne Robinson, E. E. Packer, George Lewis, K. G. Arney, Hayden Smith, and Milford Cotton. Attending the services from a distance were Mr. & Mrs. E. V. Collins, Mr. & Mrs. E. G. McKibben, Ames; Rev. Ellis Veatch, Garwin, and Rev. & Mrs. Walter Gaddis, and Miss Wilma Collins, Cedar Falls. Many friends were also in attendance from Albion, Green Mountain and Liscomb.
