Richard K. Bruene, 90 of Marion formerly of Gladbrook, entered into eternal life Monday, April 21, 2008 at Bickford Cottage in Marion, IA. Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning at the Salem Church of Lincoln. Burial with military honors will be in the Badger Hill Cemetery, rural Gladbrook. Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Gladbrook. A memorial fund is being established. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website. Richard was born on January 17, 1918 in Beaman, the son of Frederick and Luella (Benz) Bruene. He grew up in the Gladbrook area and graduated from the Gladbrook High School. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1939 with a B.S. in dairy husbandry. In 1941, he was inducted into the Army and honorably served our country as Second Lieutenant in England during WWII. He married Rose Hartford in June 20, 1943 in Rockford, IL and returned to Gladbrook in November 1945. The couple farmed north of Gladbrook for more than 50 years before moving to the Cedar Rapids area in 2000. Richard was a devoted member of the Salem Church of Lincoln where he served on the church board and taught Sunday School for many years. He served on the board at Lincoln Coop, the Gladbrook Community Schools and the Tama County Soil Conservation Commission. He was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity at Iowa State University and later he was appointed to the Dean’s Advisory Committee at the College of Agriculture at ISU. He was active in Tama County 4-H and was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. He was a member of the American Yorkshire Association, the Gladbrook Lions Club, the Ehrig-McTurk American Legion and the Masonic Lodge in Gladbrook. Richard enjoyed woodworking, horses, reading, traveling, photography and genealogy.
He will be missed by his wife of more than 64 years; three daughters: Denise (Bart) Baker of Bettendorf, Janna Bruene of Jamaica Plain, MA and Debra (Matt) Roach of Cedar Rapids; 3 granddaughters: Alison Baker of Minneapolis, MN, Andrea Baker of Bettendorf and Kelly Roach of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Warren (Mildred) Bruene of Richardson, TX; two sisters, Jean Polhemus of Spokane, WA and Merle Turner of Postville, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Richard joins his parents; sister, Doris Richards; and his grandson, Marc Baker.
