Daniel “Pat” Haberstich, 85, of Marshalltown, died on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at his home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be no visitation. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website. Born on April 21, 1922 in Beldenville, Wisconsin, he was the son of August and Linnet (Bunce) Haberstich. He served as an U.S. Army medic from 1942-1945. Pat was united in marriage to Helen Neith on November 24, 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They resided in Waterloo, Des Moines, and in Marshalltown for 54 years. He and Helen owned and operated Iowa Step and Tank until 1974 when health issues forced retirement. Pat was a member of the First United Church of Christ, American Legion, Toastmasters, and the Marshalltown Flying Club. He loved to fish, camp, read, was a very good storyteller with a sense of humor, and enjoyed nature and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed listening to big band and polka music. Left to celebrate his life are his wife of 61 years, Helen of Marshalltown; children: Linda (Richard) Randell of Iowa City and JoAnn (Glenn) Smith of Marshalltown; grandchildren: John C.W. (Sarah Wall-Randell) Randell of Boston, Massachusetts, Alex (Holly) Randell of Ankeny, Russell (Jennie) Smith of Platte City, Missouri, and Emily (Colin) Schroeder of McKinney, Texas; 2 great-grandchildren: Graham Randall and Clayton Randell; 2 sisters: Phyliss Watters of Waterloo and Mary (Bob) Kelty of Clark Lake, Michigan; 3 brothers: Glenn (Blanche) Haberstich and Bill (Virginia) Haberstich both of Waterloo, and Ed (Donna) Haberstich of Glendale, Arizona. Also Toby and Susu, his pet cats. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers: John, Bob, Ray and Jim; and sisters: Elma and Ina.
