Jack Edsel Carter, 77, of Marshalltown, passed away Monday, March 3rd, at the MMSC after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6th, at the 1st Congregational Church with Pastor Barry Holmes officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. Memorials may be directed in his memory to the Emergency Food Box or the 1st Congregational Church. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph 844-1234. Born on December 20th, 1930, in Yadkinville, NC, he was the son of Clifford and Eva (Spillman) Carter. He received his education in the area of his birth. Mr. Carter served our country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. On August 15th, 1951, he was united in marriage to Joan Eatinger at her family home in Melbourne. They made their home in Marshalltown where Jack was employed for over 40 years with Dunham-Bush. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and upon their closing, became a member of the 1st Congregational Church and was a member of the churches Hy-Vee Breakfast Club. Mr. Carter enjoyed gardening, carpentry work, helping others, working at the House of Compassion and keeping the Emergency Food Box full. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Joan, his three children: Douglas (Esther) Carter of Novato, CA, Richard (Lee Schaa) Carter of Marshalltown and Cynthia (Mark Vry) Halverson of Marshalltown, his dear grandchildren: Sidney Halverson, Maggie Halverson and Megan Carter, his siblings: Ernestine Blackwell of Charlotte, NC and Lou Pegues of Columbia, MO, sister-in-law Mildred Carter and aunt, Lillian Groce in North Carolina and many nieces and nephews he loves dearly. In death he has rejoined his parents and his brother Carl Carter.
