Pearl L. (Sharp) Berends, 92 of Marshalltown, formerly of Clemons, entered into eternal life Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center while under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Friday at the chapel of the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Friday morning from 9:30 until service time. It was Pearl’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to Pearl’s family at www.vogelfuneralhomes.com.
Pearl was born on January 3, 1916 on the family farm north of Clemons, IA, the daughter of Louis and Elsie (Nordyke) Sharp. She grew up in the area of her birth and received her education in the Clemons Public School. On November 25, 1936, she was united in marriage to John Berends in Nevada, IA. The couple made their home in Clemons where Pearl raised her family. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Pearl enjoyed crocheting, gardening and baking. She had taught Sunday School at the United Church of Christ in Clemons. John and Pearl were married for almost 53 years before his death on Oct. 18, 1989.
She will be missed by her son, Robert (Lola) Berends of Elgin, SC: her sister, Ruth Himes of Marshalltown; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In eternal life, Pearl joins her husband, John; two daughters, Joyce Nichols and Linda Axtell; two sisters, Mildred Rust and Vivian Wooten; her brother, Louis Sharp, Jr. and 2 great grandsons.
