The case of the State of Iowa vs. Charles Leighty, who was arrested for assaulting Mark Appleton, was tried at Elkader last week and was stoutly contested for nearly three days. The jury was out about two hours and returned a verdict of assault and battery, the fine for which is not to exceed $100, or imprisonment for thirty days. He will receive his sentence the last day of this term of court.
