Dr. George M. Johnson, Well Known Here,
Has Been Commissioned a Capt. In Medical Corps. The following clipping from the Marshalltown Times-Republican will be of interest to our many readers in Maquoketa and vicinity as the Dr. George M. Johnson mentioned in the article is the son of Mrs. Lydia Johnson of this city and formerly resided here.
The article reads as follows.
“Dr. George M. Johnson, general practitioner of this city, has been commissioned a captain in the medical corps of the national army. His appointment as an officer in the military establishment has forced him to resign as the physician member of the local exemption board. His resignation was handed to Sheriff J. G. Edgar, chairman of the board this forenoon.
“Governor Harding was at once notified by telegraph, and it will be his duty to appoint a physician to take Dr. Johnson’s place. This will probably be done without delay.
“Dr. Johnson has had several years of military training, both in the national guard of the state and in the Spanish-American war. He was second lieutenant of Company M of Maquoketa, First regiment Iowa National Guard at the time it was mustered into the federal service and became the forty-ninth volunteer regiment and he served for more than a year as first lieutenant of the company while it was in active service. He had served in the guard from 1893 until the spring of 1898, the latter date being the time when the regiment passed under federal control.
“Dr. Johnson does not know when he will be ordered to report for duty, but the presumption is that it will not be until fall, or not until the second officer’s reserve camps are organized, which is expected late in August.
