Brueklander, Roena Margaret (Elwood) 1914-2005

Roena Margaret Elwood was born on March 17, 1914, near Galesburg, Iowa. She was the second of eight children that were born to Thomas G. and Sarah Ellen Beem Elwood. Margaret, as she was known, attended the Cottage Grove School at Monroe, Iowa, where she completed the 8th grade. After graduation, she did housework for other families, including the Brown family from Des Moines.

On November 26, 1933, she was united in marriage to John Edward Breuklander, son of Cornelius and Katherine Fraaken Brueklander, at the home of her parents in Monroe, Iowa. To this union nine children were born, Thomas Cornelius on June 2, 1935, Mary Ellen on September 22, 1936, John Robert on August 9, 1939, James Arthur on June 3, 1941, Carol Ann on May 20, 1942, William Fred on April 30, 1943, Mary Helen on October 13, 1944, Lawerence Albert on July 20, 1946, and Linda Joyce on March 24, 1948. The couple lived and worked in Pella their entire lifetime together.

On April 10, 1979, after celebrating 46 years of marriage, her husband, John, passed away at the age of 66 years. Following his death, Margaret remained at Prairie Village Nursing Home. Since that time she had resided at care facilities in Pella and passed away early Sunday morning, November 27, 2005, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of 91 years, eight months and ten days.

Margaret leaves behind six children. They are: Jim and Anna Breuklander of Oskaloosa, Carol Visser - Bambrook and Cornie Bambrook of Eddyville, Bill and Stella Breuklander of Chickasha, OK, Mary and Jack Battistello of Pella, Larry and Becky Breuklander of Pella and Linda and Willis Vander Horst of Pella.

She also leaves daughter-in-law, Karen Collins (John Breuklander) of Knoxville. Of her original family, Margaret leaves three sisters, Dorothy and her husband Paul Renaud, Ruth (Wayne) Renaud, all of Pella, and Lois (Robert) Albee of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Thomas and Sarah Elwood; three children: Thomas C. Breuklander, Mary Breuklander and John Breuklander; son-in-law Laverne Visser; her two brothers: Robert Elwood and Gilbert Elwood; and two sisters: Luretta (Jacob) Stiernemann, Martha (Harold) Ginther.

Margaret was in happy fellowship with those gathered unto the Lord's name at 1812 Washington Street. She was fond of crossword puzzles and board games and was known for her gardening skills, especially her large roses.

For those desiring memorials may be designated for the Hospice of Pella.
