Madeline B. Marshall was born on Nov. 27, 1914, to Alberta (Rhoads) and Marshall Betterton.

She attended and graduated from the Knoxville Schools in 1935. Madeline married Robert Wilson Marshall on Dec. 31, 1941, in Lancaster, Mo.

On Aug. 10, 1943, she entered the WAC and served during World War II, taking her basic training in New Jersey and being stationed in Hobbs, N.M. for over two years.

After the service, Madeline worked at Hawkeye Farm Equipment for several years and then was employed in Dietetic Services at the V.A. Medical Center until her retirement in 1979.

For many years, Madeline and Bill restored toys for needy children at Christmastime. They worked year-round gathering and repairing broken and discarded toys. They would often come home from work to find toys on their doorstep.

Madeline was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rebekah Lodge and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She also taught Sunday School for a number of years. The many friends that Madeline and Bill made during their years of service to their country remained with them their entire lives.

Madeline died on Sept. 12 at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville at the age of 90. years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include four children that she and her late husband helped raise, Wanda Brewer (Cliff), Joy Vickroy (Dwight), John Betterton (Kathy) and Linda Shelton (Leland) and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 15 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Montz officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Radio Ministry or to Hospice of Pella.
