PELLA - Henry Laverne Visser, 65, of Pella, died Saturday, April 28, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Open Bible Church in Pella, the Rev. Ted M. Gillum officiating, the Rev. Burliss E. Parker assisting. Burial: Portergrove Cemetery near Pella. Memorials: Hospice of Pella. Visiting hours are open all day at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella today, with family present 6:30-8 p.m.
Henry Laverne Visser was born Oct. 23, 1935, on his parents' farm in Marion County south of Pella to Henry and Maggie Vander Veer Visser. Laverne attended South Porter View and Pleasant Grove country grade schools, and graduated from Pella High School in 1955. After graduation he continued working at the canning factory, then helped build the water treatment plant in Pella.
On Oct. 31, 1959, he married Carol Ann Breuklander in Unionville, Mo. They lived on the farm south of Pella, and later moved to old West Silver Grove country school onto the farm. Laverne served as an elder, deacon, usher and Sunday school teacher at both churches he attended. They began attending Harvey Assembly of God Church in Harvey in 1967.
In 1976 they joined the Open Bible Church in Pella, where the family maintains membership. Laverne started working at Rolscreen (now Pella Corp.) in 1959 and ran the chop saw in the factory for nearly 25 years. He then transferred to the veneer department and ran a clipper until retiring on March 31, 1998, after 39 years at Pella Corp. He enjoyed farming and raised sweet corn each year. He enjoyed collecting. In October 1998 he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; three children and spouses: Sherry and Lowell Sneller of Pella, Daniel and Cindra Porter Visser of Pella, and Bonnie and Mark Crady of Carroll; eight grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Johanna and Bud Manges and Estellene De Jong, all of Pella; his mother-in-law, Margaret Breuklander of Pella; and a sister-in-law, Betty Visser of Harvey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister: Babe Visser, John Visser and Wilma Trager; seven infant siblings; and his father-in-law, John Breuklander.
