EDDYVILLE - Joel Scott Vander Hoek, 33, of Eddyville and formerly of Pella and Oskaloosa, died Thursday, June 28, at his home.
His funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Pella, the Rev. John McNabb officiating. Burial: Portergrove Cemetery near Pella. Memorials: Camp Courageous in Monticello. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella is in charge of arrangements.
Joel Scott Vander Hoek was born May 30, 1968, in Des Moines, to Arlie Jean and Mary Jane Klein Vander Hoek. He attended Pella Public Schools where he completed his junior year, then obtained his GED.
He developed an interest in the outdoors as he and his brother Mike set trap lines. During high school he began working at Vermeer Manufacturing Co. part-time. For a few years he traveled with a railroad contractor doing railroad construction repair in Illinois. His last employment was with Carter Steel Co. in Oskaloosa, where he then lived. He loved to hunt and especially to fish.
He is survived by his parents of Pella; his brother, Michael S. Vander Hoek of Pella; three nephews: Michael Vander Hoek, Jake Vander Hoek and Zack Vander Hoek; a niece, Ashley Vander Hoek; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Turner Klein of Monroe.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Vernon Klein; and his paternal grandparents: Arie and Christina Vanden Heuvel Vander Hoek.
