PELLA - Gertrude Van Dorland, 82, formerly of Pella, died Saturday, Aug. 4, at Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville, where she had lived for the past 10 years.

Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella. Burial: Peoria Cemetery near Pella. Memorials: Alzheimer's Research. Visiting hours are open today at the funeral home.

Gertrude Klein was born Christina H. Van Eck to Arthur and Dena Klein Eck on Aug. 9, 1918, in Marion County. She attended Black Oak Country School and was raised with her mother's family, the Kleins, during her younger years.

On Aug. 30, 1943, she married Theodore (Ted) Van Dorland in Knoxville. He died Sept. 18, 1975, at Siesta Park Nursing Home in Oskaloosa, where he and Gertrude were living at the time. Following his death Gertrude lived various places in Pella.

In her earlier years she worked at the Coffee Shop, but for the most part was a homemaker. She enjoyed caring for children and babysitting, and loved shopping.

In April 1991, she was admitted to Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella at the time of her death.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Delores and Marvin Spoelstra of Pella, and Minnie and Edward Uitermarkt of Pella; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a great-grandson; her parents and stepfather, Henry Van Rees.
