PELLA - Lloyd Gene Vander Streek, 71, of Pella, died Monday, June 17, at Pella Regional Health Center.
His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Pella, Pastor Mark Pries and Pastor Don Orange officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Memorials: Pella parks or the charity of the donor's choice. Visiting hours begin 9 a.m. Thursday at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday.
Lloyd Gene Vander Streek was born July 1, 1930, in Pella to Herman and Martha De Kock Vander Streek.
He married Nola Ruth Boot on May 25, 1951. He lived in Pella all his life. He owned the Central Cellular U.S. Cellular dealership in Pella. Previously he had worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Pella Rolscreen (now Pella Corp.), and he owned Pella Bootery 1955-1983.
He was a sergeant in the United States Army with the 23rd Infantry Division (Indianhead) during the Korean War.
He was a member of First Reformed Church in Pella and Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella, of which he was a past commander. He was a board member of the Iowa Christmas Tree Growers Association, and was serving his 19th year as an Iowa director on the National Christmas Tree Board. He was past president of the Pella Chamber of Commerce, Pella Golf & Country Club, Pella Historical Society, Tulip Time Steering Committee, Iowa Christmas Tree Growers Association and the National Christmas Tree Association.
Lloyd and Nola represented the National Christmas Tree Association to present First Lady Barbara Bush with Christmas trees displayed in the White House Blue Room in 1989 and 1990. Lloyd also visited the vice president's residence and spoke with Dan and Marilyn Quayle.
He is survived by his wife, Nola of Pella; a daughter and son-in-law: Ann and Thomas Summitt of Pella; a son and daughter-in-law: Paul and Janice Vander Streek of Pella; four grandchildren: Nathaniel Summitt and Elizabeth Summit, and Louis and Bret Vander Streek, all of Pella; a sister, Verla Wehde of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and her children, John Wehde of Marble Head, Mass., and Amy Berkle of Crystal Lake, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Carl Wehde.
