Mass of Christian burial for Verle Arden Terrell, 69, of Knoxville, who died on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at his home, were held on Saturday, May 12, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Spring officiated at the services.
The eulogy was by Jerry Putz. Music was provided by soloist Katie Davis and organist Donnie Putz.

Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville. Military honors were accorded by Baty-Tucker Post 168, American Legion and John Myers Post 3519, VFW.

Casket bearers were Dick Dishman, Roy McCullough, Ron Henning, Wendell Terrell, Darrell Spaulding and LaVerne Taylor.

Verle was born on July 7, 1931 in Chariton. He was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters all born to Walter and Iva (Cavaness) Terrell. Growing up, Verle attended school in the Chariton school district.

After leaving school as a young man, Verle held numerous jobs. He began working with the Chariton Police Department in 1954, then eventually moved on to working for Winpower in Newton in 1955.

In 1956 Verle enlisted in the U.S. Army for service as an automotive mechanic from 1956 to 1958. During his enlistment period in the Army, Verle worked towards and was awarded his GED diploma.

After discharge from military service, Verle held numerous jobs stemming from taxi services in Chariton to raising turkeys in Indianola, to putting up patios in Sacramento, Calif. In June 1962.

Verle began working at the Knoxville Veterans Administration Hospital as a nursing assistant.

On November 24, 1962, he married Judith Ann Putz in Plattesmouth, Neb.

During his employment with the Veterans Administration, Verle began working as a security officer there, where he worked until his retirement in 1986.

He later worked at the SuperWash car wash in Knoxville, where he retired again in 1997.

He was a member, and one time president of the Knoxville Jaycees. During his employment with the Knoxville VA security force, he also served duties as Auxiliary Police for the city of Knoxville. He was a member of American Federation of Government Employees and a fond member of the Good Sam's Hillbilly camping club.
He was also a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Verle enjoyed playing bingo, assembling jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and a occasional trip to the casinos. He looked forward every year going south to Canyon Lake Resort, in Mission, Texas. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Judith of Knoxville; four daughters, Lois Vroegh and Debbie RoJohn both of Knoxville, Cindy Dabb of Russell and Cathy Mackey of Independence, Mo.; three sons, Verle Allyn Terrell and Jim Terrell both of Knoxville and Tim Terrell of Monroe; a sister, Maxine Gravlin of Rockford, Ill.; a brother, Dean Terrell of Elgin, Ill.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Arrangements were made by Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.
