Manly Gifford was born in New Jersey, September 8, 1816, and removed with his parents when two years old to New York. From thence he moved to Indiana, where he was married December 13, 1838 to Miss Sarah Davis. In 1843 he moved to the then territory of Iowa, and after residing during the summer in Des Moines county, he moved in the fall to Oskaloosa, and from there went to and settled at Toole’s Point, now known as Monroe, when there were but three or four settlers in Jasper county. He was for sometime a member of the legislature and was at one time elected to the office of county Judge, but refused to qualify. He acted as agent in settling affairs and transacting business for a number of families, and filled many positions of local importance in the community.

Death entered his family in December 1865 and left him to mourn the loss of his affectionate and cherished wife. After remaining a widower for eight years, he was married to Mrs. M. S. Bain in 1873. He removed to Knoxville in 1871, where he has since resided. He has been for a long time feeble in body, and about three weeks ago went to Colfax for the improvement of his health, but after remaining there about two weeks, came home more feeble than before, and continued to decline until he quietly, without a struggle, passed into the sleep of death at ten minutes of six o’clock on Thursday morning, March 21, 1889. He was taken to Monroe for interment in the cemetery at that place on Saturday, where he for so many years lived a prominent and useful life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. W. Evans of this city.

He was the father of eight children, four sons and four daughters, seven of whom are still living and they with the afflicted wife are left to mourn the loss of a kind father and affectionate husband. Mr. Gifford has been a highly respected citizen of every community in which he has lived and many friends in all these communities will be saddened by his death. He has been identified with some of the leading business interests of the city, being one of the Board of Directors of the Marion County National Bank at the time of this death.
