Death of Governor Stone.

Ex-Governor Wm. M. stone died at his residence in Oklahoma City, Ok, July 18, 1873, and he was buried in Knoxville, last Friday. He was the sixth Governor of Iowa, and was born Oct. 14, 1827.

His parents, who were of English ancestry, moved to Lewis county, N. Y., when he was but a year old.

William's grandfather, Aaron Stone was in the second war with England. When our subject was but six years old his parents moved into Ohio, locating in Coshocton County. Like many other self-made men, he had but few advantages. At seventeen he was apprenticed to the chairmaker's trade, and he followed the business until he was 23 years of age, reading law during spare hours. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 at Ravenna, Ohio.

After practicing three years at Coshocton he, in November, 1854, settled in Knoxville. The year after locating there Mr. Stone purchased the Knoxville Journal, and was one of the prime movers in forming the Republican party in Iowa.

In April, 1857, Mr. Stone was chosen judge of the Eleventh judicial district when the new constitution went into effect in 1858. In May, 1861, enlisted as a private; was made captain and subsequently promoted to major.

In August, 1862, he was appointed by Governor Kirkwood, colonel of the Twenty-second Iowa Infantry, Colonel Stone commanded a brigade until ordered to the gulf department, when he resigned.

He was nominated for Governor at Des Moines in 1863 and was elected by a large majority. He was inaugurated January 14, 1964, and was re-elected 1865, has four years of office closing January 16, 1868. Governor Stone made a very energetic executive.

In May, 1857, he married Miss Caroline Matthews, a native of Ohio, then residing in Knoxville. One son survives him, William A.

As a stumper few men were the equals of "Bill" Stone, as he was everywhere familiarly known. Gov. Stone's death, says the Register, "Will carry many men back to the birthday of the Republican party.

He was one of those who stood by the cradle of the party in this State and whose name is closely associated with its earlier victories in the State.

Brilliant as a politician, brave as a soldier and officer and generous and sociable as a man, Gov. Stone will long be remembered. Of the Iowa Governors from 1860 to 1893, from Kirkwood to Boies he is the first to die. Yesterday it was an unbroken line, today one of the earliest and the most prominent in the line of Governors is missing. His life's work was finished - and so is his life. ~ The Newton Journal, newton, Iowa WEd 26 July 1893.
