REV. H. L. VAN DELLEN

Death came Thursday morning, November 15, 1956, at a Des Moines hospital to one of Pella's and the surrounding communities' well known residents. Rev. Herman L. Van Dellen passed away at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 27 days following but a short illness; ending a work of over 40 years as missionary with the American Sunday School Union.

Herman L. Van Dellen was born in Veenwouldsterwal, The Netherlands, on February 18, 1875, to Lubbert Van Dellen and Grietje Krijthe. At the age of 18 years he came to America with his parents and first settled at Chicago, ll., section of Englewood. He was married to Bessie Aukema on October 15, 1903. To this union were born five children: Lubbert Van Dellen of Pella, Clarence Van Dellen of Westfield, New Jersey, Edward Van Dellen of Visalia, California, Margaret, Mrs. Elgin Skaar of San Lorenzo, California, Grace, Mrs. Gerald Starr of Pella.

While at home with his parents and later after his marriage at Englewood near Chicago, he began teaching school in a Christian school and spent evenings and other off times in helping at missions in the slums of Chicago. Also pursuing work as an importer, at one time the owner of the Netherlands Importing Co. of Chicago.

In 1914 he with his family moved to Sully where he was the principal of the Sully Christian School at its opening. In 1916 the family moved to Albia where he began what was to be his work for the remainder of his life. He began his work as missionary with the American Sunday School Union. His work took him to 16 counties of Iowa and as many as 43 rural and mining camp Sunday Schools. His capacity was both missionary and financial worker for the Union. In 1918 the family moved to Pella which was until his death his home. At the age of 75 years he retired from active duty but continued until his death to serve Sunday Schools at Evans, West Des Moines, and Amsterdam.

Surviving beside his five children are eight grandchildren and the following brothers: Rev. I. Van Dellen of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. R. L. Van Dellen of Bradenton, Florida, and Professor Elizo Van Dellen of Ventura, California. His wife preceded him in death in 1945 as also did his parents in previous years.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 19, 1956, at 1:30 p.m. from the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home. The Rev. Everett Ward and the Rev. Robert Smith were in charge with burial being made in Oakwood Cemetery. Dr. Henry Cox accompanied Rev. Charles Burton as he sang "Does Jesus Care" and "Face to Face." Acting as casket bearers were: Rev. Kenneth F. Sonder, Rev. Jacob De Koning, Paul O. Johnson, William Harriger, Rev. George Wolfe, and Edgerton D. Nix.
