MRS. JOHANNA JACOBA ROORDA

Mrs. Johanna Jacoba Roorda, the daughter of George and Mary Verhey, was born at Pella, Iowa, on February 12, 1876, and passed away this life on November 24, 1956, at the Martin Nursing Home in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she had been confined for the past week. She had attained the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 12 days.

On February 11, 1898, she was united in marriage to Epka A. Roorda of Pella, and spent her entire life in the Pella vicinity with the exception of five years spent in South Dakota.

To this marriage were born 2 sons and 3 daughters, namely Andrew Edward, passing away at the age of three months, Andrew Verhey who passed away in the year 1918 at the age of 18 years, Mrs. Marie Toom of Knoxville, Mrs. Dora Groenendyk of Cedar, Mrs. Georgia Tysseling of Pella. She leaves one sister, Dr. Marie Verhey, also of Pella. Others who mourn her passing are Roy, a foster son of Des Moines, Iowa, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Epka, two sons, two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Roorda was a loyal member of the Pella First Reformed Church, although her health did not permit church attendance for many years. She was a devoted mother and an encouragement to her children and grandchildren.

A family prayer service was held at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home prior to the memorial service which was held at the First Reformed Church on Monday at 2 o'clock p.m. The Rev. Herman J. Ridder and Rev. Anthony Haverkamp officiated. Interment was made in the family plot at Oakwood Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were: Mr. Andrew Buwalda, Mr. John Buwalda, Mr. Andrew Bogaards, Mr. Paul Roorda, Mr. Ralph J. Kuiper, and Mr. Gerrit J. Kuiper. Special music was provided by Mrs. Marvin Tysseling and Mrs. Dick De Heus, with Miss Katherine De Koning as accompanist. Selections were "Nearer, My God to Thee" and "Hiding in Thee."
