JOHN OLSTHOORN

John Olsthoorn was born on March 9, 1877 at Schipluiden in The Netherlands, and departed this life at Sully, Iowa July 7, 1956 10:45 a.m. having reached the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 28 days.

Son of Adrianus Olsthoorn and Cornelia Nolet he spent his childhood days in the parental Netharlands home, where he attended school and later served in the armed forces of that country.

Mr. Olsthoorn came to America in 1903 and on June 12, 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertie Moss at Sully, Iowa. This union endured for fifty-three years, to which were born seven children namely: Anna of Sully, Mrs. Cora Hartgers of Sully; Arie of Newton, Lambert of Taintor, Mrs. Johanna Vos of Newton; Mrs. Gertrude Swank of Newton, and Henry of Grinnell.

Mr. Olsthoorn became a member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church in the year 1904 by making confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour. At the time of death he continued his steadfast faith. By the grace of God he lived on exemplary life in the midst of his family and community. His testimony was not that of a ready tongue, but of a quiet Godly life. He could rejoice that he saw all of his children make the good choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, three sons, 4 daughters, two sisters and one brother in the Netherlands, twenty-three
grandchildren one, namely Gerald Olsthoorn of Fort Riley, Kansas serving with the armed forces, three great grand children, a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held at the Sully Christian Reformed Church July 9, 1956 at 1:30 p.m. the seminarian Gordon Stuit officiating. Burial was made in the Sully Cemetery.

Serving as casket Bearers were grandsons, Melvin Hartgers, Lewis Hartgers, Harry Hartgers, Marion Olsthoorn, Gerald Olsthoorn and Delmar Vos. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Ludolph Zylstra, Dewey, William, and Bermie Nikkel, with Mrs. William Nikkel accompanist. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Garden Chapel Funeral Home Pella, Iowa.
