Shirley Mae Statler Norton

Shirley Mae Statler Norton, 90, of Pella, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Comfort House in Pella.

A funeral is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home. Burial is at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Visitation with family begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous, Hospice of Pella or Pella United Methodist Church.

Garden Chapel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Norton was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Brighton, the daughter of Hattie Mae Lynn and Roy S. Statler. She married Russell Loraine Norton April 11, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died in 2008.

She was educated in Jefferson County rural schools, graduating from Lockridge High School in 1940.

After graduation she worked in grocery stores at Four Corners and Lockridge. She moved to Fairfield where she worked at Vans Super Value. In Fairfield, she met her future husband, who served in the Navy Seabees overseas during World War II.

The couple made their home in Fairfield.

The family enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and boating. They spent a lot of time watching barges on the Mississippi River.

She was active in her daughter's activities. She was proud to be a choir mother at the Methodist church and a Girl Scout leader. She was always available to help at all school activities.

She enjoyed doing crafts and cooking, especially trying new recipes.

She and her husband were active in the Western Square Dance Club in Fairfield.

She was part of the United Methodist Women.

She served as a bookkeeper at the Fairfield HyVee for 18 years.

She retired in 1981, when the couple moved to Pella to be near their only granddaughter.

She cared for her husband at home for seven years after he had a stroke, until his death.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Mae "Sherry" Westra and spouse Steve of Pella; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Rich and Faith Keller; and one brother Robert Statler.

In addition to her husband, Russell, she was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister.
