PELLA PIONEER IS CALLED TO REWARD

Well Known Farmer For Many Years Who Came Here From Holland In Early '70s

Marinus Van Gorp, one of the early settlers of Pella, died at his home on East Franklin street about 5:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, after an illness that lasted for almost four years. He came to America from the Netherlands in the early seventies, locating on a farm northeast of Pella which remained his home for many years.

Mr. Van Gorp was an industrious worker and highly regarded by all of his neighbors and friends. After relinquishing active work on the farm, he moved to the city of Pella, and since that time has been taking life more easily. His health began to fail about three and a half years ago, being afflicted with palsy. His health began to fail quite rapidly and ten days ago he was stricken with pneumonia and this took such a firm hold that no hope was held out from the very beginning. He lingered until late Saturday afternoon, when he passed peacefully away.

Marinus Van Gorp was born in the southern part of the Netherlands, February 11, 1854 and when a young man 17 years of age he came to this country, locating in Pella. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Van Roekel and to this union eight children were born. Three children preceded their parents in death, five of whom survive and are as follows: Mrs. G. Klosterman of Pella; Peter Van Gorp of Galesburg; John Van Gorp, living east of Pella; Gerrit Van Gorp, living northeast of Pella; and Mrs. Neal Ver Meer, of Pella. The wife and mother died in 1911. He is also survived by three brothers, Wm. Van Gorp, Frank Van Gorp and Jacob Van Gorp, all of Pella.

Mr. Van Gorp was married a second time, his marriage to Mrs. Ver Meer taking place in 1913 and she with the five children and three brothers are left to mourn his passing.

He was a faithful husband, a devoted father and a kind and generous neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at the Second Christian Reformed church Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock in charge of Rev. D. Hollebeck, Interment was made in Graceland cemetery.

A large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place. On account of the bad roads a distance of several miles had to be made.
