BUSSEY — Maxine Harrison, 73, of Bussey, passed peacefully in her sleep June 12, 2013, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Maxine was born Nov. 26, 1939, to Elmer and Mariam Johannes and grew up in Albia with her two sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Albia High School in 1958. Maxine married Donald Harrison on Dec. 24, 1958, and together they raised their five wonderful girls on a farm in rural Cedar. She was an outstanding cook and filled her days caring for her family. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Maxine was a member of First United Methodist Church in Knoxville, A.R.T.E Club and the CCC Club. She will be remembered by family and friends for her kind and compassionate spirit. In 2007, Maxine and Donald moved to the Harrison family farm in rural Bussey. Maxine enjoyed the many birds that visited her feeders and made adjustments to out-smart the squirrels trying to steal the seeds. This beautiful home that Donald built for her provided her many days of peacefulness, and she loved sharing it with all who came to visit.

The surviving members of her family include her beloved husband, Donald; her sister, Ruth Hassman of Knoxville; daughters, Tammi (Joe) Green of Clive, Patti (Jack) Allen of State Center, Kathi (Curt) Johansen of Medina, Ohio, and Angi (Martin) Roemerman of Iowa City. She is also survived by her grandchildren, who brought her so much joy, Justin and Carmyn Ferguson, Levi and Megan Ferguson, Scott and Sheila Green, Brad and Jaci Green, Kyle and Mckenzie Green, Harrison and Laura Van Mersbergen, Matthew Allen, Katie and Chris Pruess, Anne and Matt Moser, Elli Allen and Emma Allen, Meredith (Jake Ecklund) Roemerman, Kaitlyn and Adam Wright, Daniel Roemerman and Anna Roemerman. Maxine also shared her love with 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Debra Jean, her parents, her sister Betty Ann and her two brothers Dale and Michael Johannes.

Funeral services for Maxine were held on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville with Pastor Brent Hanna, officiating and Curt Johansen, eulogist. Burial followed in the Hamilton Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Maxine’s caregivers, Dr. Blew of Ottumwa and his staff and Dr. Turner of Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and her staff.

She received tremendous support from many kind nurses and caregivers during her battle, and she appreciated all who made her treatments easier to endure.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Debra Jean Harrison. ~ The Ottumwa Courier, Ottumwa, Iowa 28 Jul 2014.
